Is Ellicott City Flooding Again Now
Howard County has been working on flood mitigation plans since the first overflowing in 2016, but some have said there has been as well lilliputian progress while businesses and residents face the threat of heavy flooding all over again.

Every time it rains, residents and business organisation owners in Ellicott City, Maryland, kickoff going through mental checklists of what they need to do in instance severe flooding forces them to evacuate.

Ahead of Wed's storms, John Shoemaker, who is both a resident and a business owner, already put out the sandbags and cleared out the most valuable items in his store. His family owns Shoemaker Country, an antiques and custom furniture store.

Marker DeLuca, deputy director for public works with Howard County, said, "I respect her opinions, and I can empathize her frustration, because capital projects, they do accept a while" to go from planning to construction.
But DeLuca said at that place has been progress: There have been stopgap measures, such as cleaning out the culverts that run through the metropolis and an aggressive program to remove any debris that would exacerbate flooding.
"Y'all certainly can't discount that," he said.

Though they're curt-term measures, DeLuca said they are part of an ongoing strategy to increase public safety.
In the long term, there's a $140 million plan to mitigate flooding that DeLuca said has to get through approving by regulatory agencies. Permitting is being done through the Maryland Department of the Surround and the U.South. Army Corps of Engineers.
County Executive Calvin Brawl said he's hopeful the total "Safe and Sound" flood mitigation program can exist carried out by 2025, and an update on where things stand up with the projection planning is set for Aug. 27.
Walsh said she understands that some of the work on reducing floods is dependent on those exterior agencies, but on the flip side, she argued at that place were things within the canton'southward control that weren't being done, including limiting development in areas that she said contribute to runoff that could bear upon historic Ellicott Metropolis.
In the meantime, she said, she keeps a close heart on the culvert that runs behind homes that line Principal Street. A recent pelting of just one-third of an inch "turned it into a river," she said.
And Shoemaker, who spent Wed making sure his wife and 3-year-old were out of impairment'due south mode, was asked, with the constant take a chance of flooding, why stay?
